Attributes of The University of Manila Graduates
The University of Manila Experience turns out well-grounded graduates who have three main attributes: Love of Country, Love of Science, and Love of Virtue
Love of country, which gives no effort to save that country from its own faults, vices and shortcomings, is a deceptive feeling, a shallow sentiment. Let us realize the fact that we are here not only to teach the structure, organization or operation of the government or to dish out and interpret the wisdom of time-honored and respected philosophers or to recite poetic verses. We are worth more than that. We are here to mold our students into law abiding, alert, and God-fearing citizens.
In meeting this end, the University of Manila endeavors our teachers to learn the excellent, innovative techniques in teaching, which they will impart to our students. Our students will then become more globally competitive, at par with the international standards in pedagogy. If they are now equipped with the proper learning paraphernalia, and they, then as Filipinos students are proud of their Filipino lineage, in braving the challenges of education. They are the fruits of our labor built on the pillars of undying love, innovative dedication of from our professors.
Love of science means love of truth. One seeks for the truth to found out the veracity of life’s mysteries and realities. This is done by reading books, by doing research work, by attending seminars, among others. Without truth we cannot rise above the fear and superstition in this world.
Character Education should not be taken for granted. We should live by precepts and examples. Our tasks are not only to train experts in the professional field but also to individuals equipped with a sense of values.
Ethics in the profession is as equally important as mastery of skills, mechanics and tools of the trade. We educate our young to earn a livelihood and to appreciate the eternal values and standard imperatives to effective living. There must be a harmonious blending of ethical and professional studies if we are to realize the third element of the UM, trilogy, VIRTUS, which forms one of the basic pillars in this University, A learned man without character or sense of ethical values is worse than an ignoramus in learning and in virtue.
