A Living Legacy: The University of Manila
The University of Manila (UM) was born from a bold dream.
On October 5, 1913, five young Filipinos—still students themselves—met in Intramuros with a simple but daring vision: to build a school for the Filipino youth. With little money but immense courage, they founded what would first be called Instituto de Manila, guided by the ideals Patria, Scientia, et Virtus—Love of Country, Love of Science, and Love of Virtue.
Classes formally began in 1914, and by 1921, the institution had grown strong enough to become the University of Manila, a milestone that marked its transformation into a full-fledged university dedicated to accessible, values-based education.
A University That Withstood History
UM has endured and flourished through two World Wars, political change, and social transformation. From its early years, it steadily expanded—opening colleges in Law, Liberal Arts, Education, Business, Engineering, Music, and Graduate Studies, among others—always responding to the needs of the times.
The College of Law quickly earned national respect, producing Bar topnotchers and judges, legislators, diplomats, and national leaders, a tradition of excellence that continues to this day.
Leadership That Shaped Generations
UM’s growth was guided by visionary leaders, beginning with Dr. Apolinario G. de los Santos, followed by Dr. Mariano V. de los Santos, the youngest university president in Philippine history and a national leader in higher education. He was later succeeded by Madame Helen de los Santos, whose steady leadership carried the University through decades of change.
In 1981, Dr. Virgilio de los Santos ushered in an era of modernization, expanding academic programs and strengthening UM’s national and international standing. His contributions to education and diplomacy earned him the Order of the Rising Sun from the Emperor of Japan.
Global Reach, Filipino Heart
UM broke new ground in 2003 by becoming the first university in the Philippines authorized to offer a Bachelor of Arts in Japanese Language, later strengthened by the establishment of the International Language School, welcoming students from across Asia.
Modern Excellence, Enduring Values
Under the leadership of Dr. Emily Dodson de Leon (President, 2006–2024), UM intensified its commitment to quality and excellence through program accreditations, academic innovation, internalization and institutional strengthening—ensuring that tradition and progress moved forward together.
In this twenty-first century, the University entered a new chapter with Atty. Dave Bernar de los Santos elected as President and Dr. Richard Dodson de Leon as Chairman.
UM Today
Today, the University of Manila stands as a living institution—rooted in history, driven by excellence, and committed to shaping citizens who serve society with competence, integrity, and compassion.
From a small breakfast meeting to a century-old legacy, UM remains faithful to its founding purpose:
Education not only to succeed but to serve.
