The University of Manila, through its School of Engineering, recently conducted an outreach program at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), reinforcing the university’s commitment to social responsibility and community engagement by supporting Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs).
Under the leadership of Engr. Sean Lopez, the initiative sought to promote rehabilitation and personal development among PDLs through constructive dialogue and motivational activities. Representatives from the university, BJMP personnel, and PDL participants convened for a program focused on motivation, reflection, and fostering human connection.
During his remarks, Engr. Lopez underscored the importance of dignity, self-worth, and resilience, encouraging participants to approach their circumstances as opportunities for growth rather than setbacks. He emphasized the pivotal role of education, discipline, and maintaining a positive outlook in rebuilding lives, thus aligning the program with the university’s mission of cultivating socially responsible citizens.
The event featured presentations, interactive discussions, and reflective sessions that enabled PDLs to share their experiences and aspirations. Many participants conveyed appreciation for the visit, noting that such initiatives contribute to a sense of being recognized and valued by wider society.
University officials affirmed that the outreach program exemplifies the institution’s belief in service learning beyond traditional academic settings. By engaging with marginalized groups, including PDLs, students and faculty are reminded of their responsibilities in nation-building and ethical leadership.
The BJMP administration expressed appreciation for the partnership, acknowledging the value of collaboration with academic institutions in supporting the rehabilitation and moral recovery of PDLs. They further noted that programs of this nature have a positive impact on the mental and emotional well-being of inmates.
As the activity concluded, the University of Manila reiterated its commitment to sustaining similar outreach efforts in the future, leveraging education, empathy, and service to foster hope and transformation within communities, including those within correctional facilities.
